The ancient kingdom of Fife

Of all her beloved Scotland, perhaps Margaret Oliphant loved best the land of her ancestors, the ancient kingdom of Fife. As a reviewer once noted, she was “Fife to the fingertips” (Scots Observer, 14 June 1890).

In another article, entitled "Mrs Oliphant's Novels", a reviewer wrote "It is not too much to say of Katie Stewart that it made the 'East Neuk of Fife' in some sort classic ground; that it did for that far corner what in larger degree Scott's poetry has done for the Highlands . . ." (Blackwood's Magazine, June 1873).

Mrs Oliphant's family history, and its relationship to Katie Stewart and The Heirs of Kellie, is explored in The Family Tree of Margaret Oliphant.
